Age< 72 hours: <2.0 ng/mL at birth, rises to <=20 ng/mL at 18-30 hours of age, then falls to < or =0.15 ng/mL by 72 hours of age

    < or =0.15: Normal (Bacterial infection is absent)
    0.15-0.5: bcterial infection is unlikely but local bacterial infection is possible.*
    0.5-2: Systemic infection (sepsis) is possible.** 
    2-10: Sepsis or severe localized bacterial infection
    >10: Severe bacterial sepsis or septic shock.
